Voting Rights Restored for Felons

May 14, 2009

Please post and/or forward

Dear Friends:

On May 4, 2009, Governor Christine Gregoire signed legislation that restores the right to vote for felons. The legislation is effective 90 days after she signed it, thus if a person has a felony conviction and is no longer under supervision by the Department of Corrections they can vote starting July 24, 2009. This law applies even if they have not yet satisfied their legal financial obligations.

Please take the time to inform anyone you might know who this may affect। In addition, I think it is important to thank the Governor for the courage to sign this important piece of legislation that has always affected people of color disproportionately.

Thank you and have peace.
